The Obuasi Police Command has launched investigations into the alleged food poisoning that happened at a funeral and Birthday Party organized in Obuasi of the Ashanti Region over the weekend.
A two (2) year old boy has been confirmed dead by AGA Health Foundation hospital after eating the food from the funeral.
Nine (9) mourners and 11 people who went to a birthday party celebration have been reported to have been hospitalized at AGA Health Foundation and St. Jude hospital after allegedly eating ‘poisoned’ food at the funeral and Birthday ceremony.
Initial reports suggested that the tilapia they consumed with Banku, is believed to have been preserved with the toxic chemical formalin.
The Obuasi Police Commander DSP Martin Asenso who narrates the incident in an interview with Angel FM’s Chuku Joseph monitored by Ghtimesonline.com said there was a variety of food served at the funeral and the birthday party including Waakye, Rice, Banku with chicken and fish, drinks.
According to DSP Martin Asenso, the Uncle of the deceased Mr. Kwadwo Sam went to the funeral and brought the food he served at the funeral to his 2-year-old nephew.
“The deceased after eating the food complained about stomach pains and he was pronounced dead at AGA Health Foundation hospital” DSP Martin Asenso explained.
“The caterer who served at the funeral has been arrested. The Uncle of the deceased Kwadwo Sam was arrested for attending a funeral amidst Covid-19 restrictions. He has granted bail due to the death of his nephew because he has to be with the family for all the necessary arrangements for his deceased nephew”.
DSP Martin Asenso said, “Those who have been hospitalized will be arrested when they are discharged for breaching Covid-19 restrictions”.
The pastor who gave St. Thomas Primary School park for the funeral celebration and the Family Head of the Family who organized the funeral has been declared wanted by the police.
