Private Legal Practitioner and a former member of the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Disciplinary Committee, Lawyer Nana Yaw Osei has urged President Akufo-Addo to abolish the office of the Special Prosecutor (SP)
The Office of the Special Prosecutor was established after an act of the Parliament of Ghana passed the Office of Special Prosecutor Bill in 2017.
The office serves as an independent investigating and prosecution body to make inquiries into corruption, bribery, or other criminal cases at the national level whether they be in public or private sector.
Lawyer Nana Yaw Osei speaking on Kumasi-based Abusua Fm Bresosem Show hosted by Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah monitored by Ghtimesonline.com said the office of Special Prosecutor has failed to proscute as its core agenda.
According to Lawyer Nana Yaw Osei, the office of Special Prosecutor has become a white elephant because absolutely nothing has been achieved after the creation of the office.
“Ghanaians were assured that the office will end corruption and deal with corrupt Ghanaians including government officials but for four years the office has become a burden for Ghanaians” Nana Yaw Osei said.
Lawyer Nana Yaw Osei explained that “since the Special Prosecutor cannot prosecute any case without the Attorney General, the office must be abolished to save taxpayers money”.
He therefore charged government to resource the Attorney General in the fight against corruption and abolish the office of the Special Prosecutor”.
