The former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister under erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration, Joseph Yammin, has stated categorically that, top government officials and some NPP executives are engaging in galamsey despite the fight against it.
President Akufo-Addo declared a fight against galamsey to prevent illegal miners from destroying water bodies and land. Operation Vanguard and GalamStop taskforce were constituted to support the fight against galamsey which led to the arrest of some galamseyers, seizure, and burning of mining equipment.
Speaking in an interview with Pure FM’s Osei Kwadwo monitored by ghtimesonline.com, he said the fight against galamsey is one of President Akufo-Addo’s government policy to give miners’ concessions to top government officials and some members of the NPP.
According to Joseph Yammin, some appointees of Nana Addo and some NPP executives have invaded some virgin forest and seriously engaging in galamsey.
“The fight against galamsey by President Akufo-Addo has not been successful, because the fight only targeted Miners and Galamseyers who were in the business. The fight was to ban them from working and give their concessions to top government officials and some NPP executives” Yammin said.
“Reclamation exercise was to ban miners and galamseyers from mining site, so some government appointees could took over. Some Virgin Forests have been destroyed, in the same of reclamation exercise”.
