The former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister under the erstwhile NDC administration Joseph Yammin has lambasted President Akuffo Addo’s government for destroying excavators being used by galamsey operators in the country.
The 200 military personnel dispatched by the government to flush out illegal miners on Ghana’s water bodies have destroyed nine excavators,127 changfans, and one fuel pump, Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul revealed
The exercise christened “Operation Halt” has also led to the arrest of two Chinese nationals.
Outlining the scope of work of the team, the Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, warned that the armed military men will take action against persons who are found to have returned to the site.
Joseph Yammin speaking in an interview with Pure Fm’ Osei Kwadwo monitored by Ghtimesonline.com stated emphatically that it doesn’t make sense for the government to destroy galamsey operators’ excavators while Local assemblies hire excavators for dredging of water bodies and reshaping of roads in communities.
According to Joseph Yammin, the excavators can be given to the District and Municipal assemblies in the country for their developmental projects rather than burning.
“I was shocked when the Defence Minister boldly justifies why the soldiers destroyed 9 excavators while District and Municipal Assemblies do not have excavators for development. The Minister was bold enough to say they were deployed to the mining sites to destroy and they are destroying them” Yammin explained.
Yammin added “MMDCEs will hire excavators for dredging, desilting of water bodies and reshaping of deplorable roads in their community. Does it make sense to destroys excavators while the government struggling to get excavators for MMDCEs for development”?
“Is Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul aware that there is a law in the constitution which says those excavators of galamseyers when seized should be confiscated to the state?”
