The former Ashanti Regional Minister under the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration Joseph Yammin has clarified that he is a Ghanaian citizen but not a Lebanese.
People including the Member of Parliament for Assin Central Hon Kennedy Agyapong have over the years questioned the nationality of Joseph Yammin whether he is a Ghanaians or Lebanese because of his complexion and his appearance.
Speaking in an interview with Pure Fm Osei Kwadwo monitored Ghtimesonline.com when he was narrating his life story said “My father is a Lebanese but my mother is a Ghanaian from Nadowli West Constituency in the Upper West Region”
“I was born in Kumasi Ahinsan and I have spent all my life in Ashanti Regional capital Kumasi. Though my father is Lebanese I’m from Ghana and a proud Ghanaian. I’m from the Nadowli West Constituency in the Upper West Region my mother hometown because I’m from my mother’s side, not my father”
Yammin when he was asked whether he has visited Lebanese before said “Yes, I have visited my family in Lebanese before when my father was alive. Lebanese is a country where my father comes from, I’m not shy of it but I’m a Ghanaian and I love Ghana more than any other country”
“As it stands now, I cannot contest any position in Lebanese because I’m not a citizen of Lebanese but a Citizen of Ghana. Even if the Lebanese president gives me a free position in Lebanese, I will never take it because a citizen of Ghana cannot hold a position in Lebanese” He explained.
He added “I’m not bothered when people questioned my nationality because I’m a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) because the wife of the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Samira Bawumia is a Fulani but have you heard people like Kennedy Agyapong and other NPP members questioning her identity. The late National Chairman of the NPP Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey was not a Ghanaian but the NPP never questioned his nationality”
