The former Presiding Member for Kwadaso Municipal Assembly who is a member of the Ashanti Regional Communication Team Member for NPP, Kwame Kwakye has affirmed that former President John Dramani Mahama deserves no credit for the construction of the new Kejetia City Market.

Then-President John Dramani Mahama in 2015 cut sod for the construction of a modern Kumasi Kejetia market project with amenities include a CCTV monitoring system, a Police station, a clinic, a fire station, and a bus terminal.

The construction of the Kejetia modern market faced series of demonstrations by a section of traders in Kumasi after the place was demolished to pave for the construction.

In an interview with Pure Fm’s Osei Kwadwo, Kwame Kwakye explained that the Kejetia market was initiated by Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) with the support of the government and Manhyia.

According to Kwame Kwakye, the cost involved in the construction of the Kejetia market cannot be added to Ghana’s debt ratio because the assembly is paying the cost of the project.

“NDC and former President John Dramani Mahama took the credit for Kejetia Market construction because they were in power when the assembly went to parliament to defend the construction. When the assembly presented the budget of the construction to parliament for approval. The assembly was told that the assembly needs government support to secure the loan that was when former President John Dramani Mahama was involved because he was the President at that time” Kwame Kwakye revealed.

“So far as former President John Dramani Mahama was involved to help the assembly to secured a loan for the construction of the Kejetia market doesn’t mean he should take all the credit”.

Kwame Kwakye added that “the traders are paying for the construction of the project through the assembly because the project was constructed by the assembly”.
